The journey of our shea butter
Every jar tells a story of craftsmanship, tradition, and dedication.
Wild trees grow the Shea fruits
Shea fruits are harvested from the rare Vitellaria Paradoxa trees, which grow exclusively in parts of Ghana. These trees produce fruit once a year, which falls to the forest floor when ripe.
Collecting fresh fruit
Women from local communities in Ghana gather in small groups to collect the fresh fruit from the forest floor. This is a meticulous process, often compared to a treasure hunt, as the fruits can be hidden in tall grass or undergrowth.
Removing the pulp
The collected fruits are quickly processed by removing the pulp, which is eaten or dried as a healthy snack. The remaining nuts are then washed to reveal a smooth, shiny surface.
Cracking the nuts
After drying, the nuts are cracked by hand to remove the hard shell, revealing the inner kernel. This labour-intensive task is performed by hand, ensuring careful handling to preserve the quality of the kernels.
Sorting and grading
The cracked kernels are carefully sorted and graded during the drying process. Any kernels with discolouration, cracks or holes are removed to ensure only the highest quality kernels are used.
Drying the kernels
The selected kernels undergo a thorough drying process. This reduces the moisture content, giving the nuts a deep brown colour, which is crucial for the production of long-lasting, non-oxidising Shea Butter.
Cold pressing the kernels
Once dried and inspected, the kernels are fed into our cold press machine. This process extracts the Shea oil while preserving the natural properties. The initial oil is deep reddish-brown due to small pieces of shea nut kernels.
Purification through filtration
To obtain pure, golden Shea Butter, we filter the raw Shea Butter twice through increasingly fine filters. The end product is then packaged in well-sealed containers, ready for use.
